Not New News, But Still Unbelievable: Couple With Obese Children Charged With Endangerment

July 28, 2011

Ugh. I really need to start finding some happier, more inspiring news stories! That is a hard task, but one that I shall dedicate myself to until I succeed (Disclaimer: it might be a while)!

But for now, this is a news story of a Georgie couple charged with “child cruelty”and a big focus is on how obese the children were: authorities found a “5 year old girl weighing 150 pounds with matted hair infested with lice and bugs…her 4 year old sister weighed nearly 90 lbs, was wearing a soiled diaper and still wearing from a bottle”

The neighbor comments that the family are “victims of todays economy” and had noticed that they had gone much of the summer (this is 2010) without electricity or running water. But again the focus is on the childrens weight: “[they] are very much obese. I think they may even have medical problems, as far as diabetes or something like that. So i think they’ll get medical attention now…the children should be winners on this one.”

This is obviously a very upsetting story, but I find it highly interesting that the obesity of the children seems to be almost more of a concern than the deplorable conditions that they are living in. You never hear of a child being taken away from a parent because of being obese (note: I think I may have found an article on this, so I reserve the right to take back this statement at any time…), but here it is highlighted as the main cause of concern. What would happen if other cases of childhood obesity were also treated as “child cruelty/endangerment”? And what should the punishment be?

So sad. If anything you could say obesity is a sign of abuse/neglect, just like bruises would be. Poor nutrition hurts the childrens bodies and futures, just like physical or verbal abuse does.
