Celebrity Spot-Lite: Kelly Osbourne vs. Christina Aguilera

August 15, 2011

Who doesn’t love a good cat fight? Well, actually, I can think of a lot of people who don’t (my dad, my postman, my gynecologist…too far?), but too bad! This one is too juicy to pass up.

Apparently there has been a scandalous feud between Kelly Osbourne and Christina Aguilera for years now about HangryHippo’s “favorite” topic…weight! According to Celebitchy (fabulous site) via UsWeekly:

After Joan Rivers, 78, said Aguilera looked “stuffed into” a Givenchy LBD at an event in Munich, Germany last month (and likened her to “Snooki‘s Scandinavian cousin”), Osbourne chimed in: “Maybe she is just becoming the fat bitch she was born to be. I don’t know. She was a c**t to me. And she bought my house!”

Osbourne’s digs at 30-year-old Aguilera’s fluctuating weight didn’t end there. “She called me fat for so many f***ing years,” Osbourne continued, “so you know what? F**k you! You’re fat too.”

Ironically, Osbourne opened up to Us Weekly in Feb. 2010 about her own weight struggles. “I took more hell for being fat than I did for being an absolute raging drug addict. I will never understand that,” the reality star, who checked into rehab for drug and alcohol addiction three times, said. The 5-foot-2 Osbourne, who once weighed “almost 160″ pounds, recalled once walking down the street when “some horrible obnoxious teenager screamed out a car window to me, ‘You’re fat!’ I went to my parents [Sharon and Ozzy] bawling, ‘I would rather be called ugly than be called fat!’”

After years of yo-yo dieting, Osbourne shed more than 48 pounds thanks to her 2009 stint on Dancing With the Stars — and she’s kept it off since!

“I just commit to half an hour a day. It doesn’t seem overwhelming and I can handle that,” she told Us in Oct. 2010. “I do half an hour on the treadmill and when I feel like doing more, I’ll do a few sit-ups and some weights.”

Like I said: ESCANDALO! So, let’s take a look at Kelly and Christina, shall we?

Now and Then

Kelly Osbourne: Now and Then

Christina Aguilera: Snooki Of Scandanavia?

Christina Aguilera: Snooki Of Scandanavia?

So, basically, both of these celebrities have struggled/are struggling with their weight and yet have decided to turn it into a vicious feud between the two instead of a) being open and honest about their struggles, b) leaving the other the hell alone, or c) banding together to form a singing duo of BBW sistas? Yes? Yes.

It is common knowledge that Kelly Osbourne has had many ups and downs with her weight (anyone with a whole layout in UsWeekly following her weight loss/gain trajectory is definitely on our radar…and how terribly revealing about our societal obsession with weight, by the way), and recently XXXtina (my private nickname for Ms. Aguilera, pronounced “Triple X Tina”) has definitely been in the limelight for the same issues, but really do you have to go and call someone a “fat bitch” in a public forum? And then you have the nerve to say how traumatized you have been when people have called you yourself “fat” in the past? I smell a HANGRY HIPPOCRITE if ever there was one…

This touches on soooo many issues (the XXXtina nickname being my personal favorite). The one that most resonates with me is the age-old problem of women being trapped in and contributing to a culture that judges them purely on physical attributes. This is the same thing third-wave? fourth-wave? feminists (never mind, that word is too loaded, let’s just say “women that care about women’s issues”) are referring to when they beg women not to call each other “sluts.” The idea is that a patriarchal society has created these terms and physical standards to belittle and demean women, and by using the language created by this system, women are only encouraging it. You know what though? I think creating a whole new hypothetical language with none of these stigma or associations wayyy too much effort (I’m a “lazy bitch,” right?) so I say we take back all these terms and make them positive! Kelly and Xtina are BOTH “fat bitches,” and good for them! Yay fat bitches! Also, yay skinny bitches! Yay accurately proportioned for their height and weight bitches! If you don’t like someone because she’s petty and mean, try using a gender-neutral term; so Kelly, while you’re a fabulous correctly proportioned bitch, it could be that you’re a bit of a jerkface.

Wow, this is so depressing. I hate when women treat each other this way. There is no excuse for it. Although I will say that I’m a little heartened by seeing that celebs have ups and downs with their weight too. I think they’re both beautiful ladies on the outside. Now maybe they’ll get their insides to match?

I had never heard people call XXXtina fat– and in the pictures still doesnt look overweight to me…
I would like to address the deeper issue- her hair is clearly trying to take over her body. I fear it may be some kind of alien creature, living on her head sucking up her juices, a la a parasite.
It may even be controlling her.
    Help her hangryhippo! Help her!!!

I don’t think anyone would argue that women have struggled mightily (and in many cases are still struggling) for a fair voice in a historically male dominated world. But stories like this remind me that our sex too often becomes its own worst enemy. I hate seeing women treat other women badly, especially around weight issues! How can we attain broader, more nurturing standards of beauty if we use weight to cut each other down? These women could have used their shared weight struggles to inspire and lift each other up, but that is obviously not the maturity level we’re dealing with here.
