Health and Inspiration:Lissa Rankin
“Promoting health without encouraging others to seek wholeness is an exercise in futility. Not until we realize that our bodies are mirrors of our interpersonal, spiritual, professional, sexual, creative, financial, environmental, mental, and emotional health will we truly heal.” -Lissa Rankin, MD
Lissa Rankin is an “OB/GYN physician, author of two (soon to be three) books, a professional artist, a blogger, an online entrepreneur, and a mother, but I am more than what I do- and so are you” and she is seriously one of the most inspiring forces in the medical practice today–the “spiritual practice of medicine.” After working in the AMA industry, dealing with big pharma and “7 minutes with patients,” and then experiencing her own personal crises, she quit her lucrative career as a doctor to truly explore and honor her calling. And her calling is helping people be as healthy as possible, as holistically as possible.
“All the things that we think of as health, all the thing we think matter–they do. It matters that you exercise, it matters that you eat well, it matters that you see the doctor. But nobody taught me [in medical school] is that what really matters is healthy relationships, having a healthy professional life, expressing yourself creatively, being spiritually connected, having a healthy sex life, being healthy financially, living in a healthy environment, being mentally healthy…these things are just as important, if not more [as doing everything doctors tell us]”
Wow. Even if you have to watch this TED Talk in parts, WATCH IT. She promotes health and healing as “caring for the mind, caring for the heart, caring for the soul.” The body will tell us when life is out of balance, when we need to focus on self-healing from the core and begin our own personal journey that will include love and gratitude and pleasure. I was moved to tears by this talk, and I know personally how deeply true her words and her mission is.
“When we let our true self be seen, when we let our inner pilot light radiate, we heal from the inside out and it’s more powerful than anything medicine can give you from the outside.”
