Media Spot-Lite: J.Simps and Post Baby Weight

August 7, 2012

It’s been a while since we’ve followed up with Jessica Simpson and her very public baby weight gain and purported multi-million dollar weight loss deal with Weight Watchers, so I found myself thinking “Why not follow up and see where our favorite slutty brownie is now?” (Really, I was just thinking about brownies. But this is what that leads to…)
Funny, because apparently July 19th, everyone was wondering the same thing. What an amazing coincidence! (I am always a little behind the times…)

Truth? Lies? Both? Neither?

Above is the magazine cover that caused an uproar when it was discovered that the photo used to show her “After” weight loss was actually a stock photo from years prior. Now, I found this while searching for info on this multi-million weight loss deal and it got me to thinking “How do we know this entire thing isn’t a ruse?” I mean, yes, it sounds pretty conspiratorial and we see pictures of celebs in public quite often so there’s no way of not actually losing the weight and pretending like you did (unlike magazine covers, where old stock photos + photoshop= lookin’ gooood). Right? But the recent media blitz of “JESSICA SIMPSON TWEETS ABOUT PEDOMETERS” and “WORKING VERY HARD to drop pounds” and “INDULGING ONCE A WEEK” just doesn’t seem authentic.

Now, why should we care? She’s a celebrity, she lies, she has more help in losing the weight than any of us can even hope for. What’s new? I suppose because when change is what’s highlighted, like these quotes below, it makes us want to believe.

“For me, I really want to do something that is a lifestyle,” Simpson, 31, told PEOPLE … “In the past I’ve been known to yo-yo diet.”

The 32-year-old star gained around 70lbs during her pregnancy and was estimated to weigh around 180lbs. Jessica is said to have lost a significant amount of weight since she began her dieting and fitness regimen a few months ago. “She’s so happy that it’s paying off because at her last weigh-in, she was down to 153 pounds!” the source said.

Hmmmm. In my last post, I commented on how it was pretty obvious that J.Simps was lying about how much weight she’d put on during pregnancy. Now, the numbers have changed, but it still just doesn’t seem authentic. And so I guess the moral of this story is: we can’t trust the media. I wish this were an instance where a new mom was actually highlighting the difficulty that comes with losing baby weight while taking care of a newborn and adjusting to the changes and challenges that your new life brings you. But it’s not. So, we can’t thank J.Simps for that. But there are resources that new moms can turn to, and thank goodness for them.
And here’s one last thing I don’t understand about Jessica: she is continually claiming that she doesn’t want to be known for her weight and that the media needs to stop belittling and harassing her about it, which I completely understand and support. But yet how is she keeping her name relevant and in the public eye? Well, with her weight, obviously! (And making a buttload of cash while doing it, I must add). You can’t have your cake and eat it too, Ms. Simpson. Unless, of course, it’s a slutty brownie instead…

I enjoy the bit above about Jessica Simpson.
This is my first time here and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it’s entertaining.
Anyway, I wondered if you had looked at the post from another angle:

“For me, I really want to do something that is a lifestyle,” Simpson, 31, told PEOPLE … “In the past I’ve been known to yo-yo diet.”

People is a magazine and they don’t necessarily present everything that the person says. They their stories are based loosely on sound bites. The quote above is pretty convincing and sounds like something that Jessica might actually say.

The next part though is pure conjecture:

The 32-year-old star gained around 70lbs during her pregnancy and was estimated to weigh around 180lbs.

She gained, “around 70lbs,” according to who? And who estimated her weight? Hmmm..

Jessica is said to have lost a significant amount of weight since she began her dieting and fitness regimen a few months ago. “She’s so happy that it’s paying off because at her last weigh-in, she was down to 153 pounds!” the source said.

Somebody, somewhere says that Jessica has lost weight… oh really? What does Jessica think about that? She’s lost 27lbs in just a few months and she’s “happy that it’s paying off” and she’s not talking about it herself? Wow, is she ever humble!

    That’s all.

Rather than calling someone you don’t know a liar, might it not be better to examine the source of the comments you’re reacting too?

I thought I posted a response to this last night but it’s not showing up. Are unpopular comments deleted?
    Just asking.

      Hi there!
First of all, no comments are deleted, unpopular are popular. I’m just simply not on the blog enough to approve comments (which I have to do through WordPress, unless one has posted before, in which case they are automatically processed) consistently, as I have been traveling a lot recently and have not had internet access. It therefore will usually take me a few days to approve of or respond to a comment. I do, however, have no problem deleting any comments in general that I deem derogatory, inflammatory, or hateful.
So, in response, it’s interesting to me that it was picked up on that she purportedly lost all that weight and yet we haven’t heard anything about it (but in the past, it’s all we’ve heard about). In terms of me calling her a liar, perhaps I should have placed more of the blame on the media and their representation of her than on how she actually portrays herself. But, here’s what I and many, many people saw: a woman who was clearly struggling with a severe amount of pregnancy weight in the public eye, who relentlessly talked about all the junk foods she was indulging in, who signed a multi-million dollar weight loss deal before even giving birth…and yet who continually insisted, when the timing and opportunity was right for her, that the weight gain was not actually that big a deal and it would be off in no time. That is simply demeaning to mothers who have similarly struggled with weight gain during pregnancy and losing that weight afterwards (without the help of a multi-million deal).
You’re right that a lot of media seems to be conjecture. And mea culpa for blaming the seeming victim instead of the source. But it just seems that celebrities continually take no agency over their actions or words, and then play victim to the media. And that is what I was (attempting to) satirize.
Thanks for reading! And I’d be interesting to know how you found my blog…
